Android Have Much More Apps Than Others - Do You Know Why

The apps that can be downloaded in a smartphone help the user in all walks of life. It has revolutionized the way people see technology. However, the more we appreciate the working of smartphones we should also consider the fact that they munch lot of data while working.

Smartphones can be compared to high end sports cars. They look good, they perform good, they are speedy, they are reliable but the only downside is that they are not fuel efficient. For a middle class person, it is very hard to maintain a Ferrari, leave aside buying it. In the same way smartphones consume a lot of data because of their larger screens. This often results in hefty phone bills after every month.

Ericsson, the networking company has claimed in one of its reports that the consumption of data and the internet traffic both depend on the software system and the network that is used by the smartphone. iPhones also consume a lot of data while working but striking reports were received on Android phones.

Ericsson claimed that an average android smartphone consumes 2.2 GB of data a month on average. On the other hand, iPhones use 1.7 GB data a month and Windows phones use 1.4 GB data. These results were based on the survey of all the three OS on the same network.

A Telecom analyst, Chetan Sharma also stated that the consumption of Android phones was the maximum. When the data consumption was calculated in the US, it was found out that the high end android smartphones consumed about 4 GB data per month. This was higher than the average consumption by smartphones in America which is clocked at 1.2 GB a month. Now the question pops up here as to why Android smartphones consume so much data as compared to the other Operating system devices.

The major reason for such a trend is that the Android smartphones have bigger screens and hence they play videos and display pictures with large pixel density. It directly impacts the data consumption of the phone and the user has to pay more for the data. There is one more reason that can be credited to the consumption of data in Android smartphones. Android is less efficient in managing apps as compared to Apple’s iOS.

Most of the Android users do not go for system upgrading as compared to the iOS users and this is one of the major reasons responsible for the extra consumption of data in Android phones. By ignoring the system upgrades, the users hang the fixes that could be done in their system. When the proper fixes are not done, it is natural that the operating system will consume more data than usual.

Jan Dawson, who is a telecom analyst too and worked for Ovum previously credited the data variation to the profile difference of Android and IOS users. For instance, an android phone user will never be opting for a tablet, since they have bigger screens anyway. On the other hand, an IOS user will always go for an iPad for bigger picture and bigger video display. Hence, the data consumption automatically increases for the Android users.

Mr. Dawson also added that it is almost impossible these days to track data usage by different smartphones. It has become a daunting task these days to monitor data usage. Most users look to track their data usage so that they can control it by the virtue of their lesser internet usage. Most carriers provide the option of checking data usage on smartphones but it is very difficult to know the exact data quantity left for the month. This also adds up to the extra consumption of data by the users.
